Midterm Exam Study Guide | Final Exam Study Guide
Your Midterm examination will be given on Tuesday, FEBRUARY 26th.
A guide to what you need to know for the midterm and final appears below. The midterm counts 30% of your overall grade (see the syllabus for the breakdown of your quizzes, paper and examinations).
Regulations
The general rules for the course cited in the home page apply. No makeups are given for oversleeping or unexcused absence from the examination. See the home page for legitimate excuses for taking a makeup examination.
A. Power Point Image Identifications
A Scantron Card will be given to you at the exam. You will be asked 5 questions about each image. There will be 5 art works or images for you to identify by being asked questions about such things as the title of the work, the precise date, the artist if known, the culture (Italian, German, Dutch, Greek, Roman, etc.) and the style (Gothic, Baroque, Romanesque, etc.). You should also be able to recognize one or two important facts about the work. The works will be taken from Dr. Soren's books, posted Power Points and the website images. Only works of art discussed IN DETAIL in class will be used on the Scantron examination. You should focus on the images presented in the class review session for the midterm and in the preceptor review before the exam at a time to be announced. This part of the midterm is worth 50 points. CAUTION: the preceptor's sessions are only THEIR opinions and could be wrong. You should rely on the preceptor sessions only as a general help but for correctness refer to the in-class review and your textbooks. You should double-check preceptor information against your notes to make sure you have the correct information. Upon rare occasions, preceptors have give out erroneous information at review sessions. You are, however, responsible for the correct information on your exams and quizzes, even if a preceptor tells you something incorrect. 50 points.
B. Matching
You must use your Scantron card to match the definition in the right hand column to the term in the left hand column. This part is ON THE BACK of your Scantron beginning with number 51. The terms you will have to know are emphasized in the website daily lecture outlines and Dr. Soren will pick 15 for the test. Only class-emphasized terms will be used. Emphasized terms are often made more bold than the other items listed on your lecture outlines, but not always. Here's a fun sample example below of how the matching will be presented for you to copy on your Scantron Card (30 points):

If you matched these correctly you put A-52, B-51, C-53 and also, probably, you are under 30 years of age and have way too much free time.
C. Definitions
This is a non-Scantron part of the test. You will be asked to define 4 or 5 terms out of a possible 8 that I will select. These terms should be given a full and detailed definition, a date where applicable, and 3 more good, lengthy and detailed facts at least. Terms emphasized in class will be used and may be drawn from your lecture notes and reading assignments. If you put one or two word or really short answers down, you will not do well. If you use a word that is technical, explain it. Example: Surrealism is an art and literary movement begun in the 1920s, remaining popular into the 1930s. Artists such as Salvador Dali painted works such as Persistence of Memory in 1929. Surrealism was pioneered by the critic and author Andre Breton in 1925. It often involved an escape into a dream world and its art was fueled by paranoid obsessions and a timeless, sizeless and airless quality. It often used objects familiar to us and combined them in unexpected ways.. Now that's a good definition! 4 or 5 points for each answer for a total of 20 points for this critical section.
D. Essay
You will be asked to write on one of the following topics. I will choose two of these to have you choose from on the examination. You must have 10 significant facts and your essay must follow a coherent thread or train of thought. You will receive no points for this essay but it is a university rule that you must pass it. If you do not, you MUST make an appointment with a graduate assistant and review why you didn't pass. Then you must make another appointment to retake the essay part and pass it. If you do not pass it 3 times or if you do not show up to retake it after failing it once or twice, you will receive a FAILING GRADE in the entire course. This is a university Tier 2 course regulation.
- Discuss the artists Vincent Van Gogh, Edvard Munch, Pablo Picasso, Lyonel Feininger, and theatre impressario Max Reinhardt and their influence on The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. Include specific dates and works of art and give an in-depth answer.
- Discuss the influence of Academic artists such as Ingres, Bougereau and Francois de Cuvillies and writers such as Jules Verne on the films of Georges Melies.
- What were some of the artistic and architectural influences on the movie Metropolis (1925, Germany)? Discuss specific people and movements and German history of the period.
- Discuss how the Baroque movement and artists such as Caravaggio and Rembrandt influenced German theatre in the early 1900s and ultimately influenced the German and American silent film.
- Loreena McKennitt is said to be influenced by the Romantic and Pre-Raphaelite movements but also has other influences in her music and videos. Discuss this and be specific and detailed in your essay.

Regulations
No makeup exam will be given except for legitimate medically documented excuses or documented family emergencies such as a postmarked note from the actual family member affected explaining the situation in detail and giving contact phone numbers and emails. Missing the exam due to oversleeping or forgetting the time or not feeling well without medical documentation will result in a failing grade for the examination. If you have made early airline reservations, this does not excuse you from the final, nor do family plans that were pre-made. Tell your family now that you must be here for all exams and give them the dates. Note carefully--students wishing to leave the room for any reason during the examination MAY NOT return so go to the bathroom BEFORE the exam begins. For the midterm and final, the use of writing paper other than the actual exam paper given to you is strictly prohibited and will be considered as cheating. But do bring a blank piece of paper to use for all quizzes.
I am sorry for these rules but large numbers of students have been caught cheating already in the class over the years necessitating these guidelines. Last semester 6 UA students were caught cheating with disastrous results for them including receiving an E or expulsion from university.
A. Power Point Image Identifications
A Scantron Card will be used in a manner similar to that used for the midterm. There will be 5 art works to identify and about which you will be asked questions. Please answer the questions designed to make you identify the title of the work, the artist, culture, date and the style and be able to recognize one or two important facts related to the images shown. The works will be taken from your textbooks and from the website. They will be art objects or film stills or people prominently featured in the lectures. There may be one slide from the material covered in the first half of the course and the rest will be material we discussed after the midterm. For the earlier material consult the midterm study guide on this website. We will do this section this time as a multiple choice where we provide a variety of answers and you choose the right one using a Scantron form. 25 points.
B. Matching
Match the description in the right column that best suits the term in the left column. The terms you should know have all been covered in class and in your reading assignments. Up to 20% of the matching will be taken from the first half of the course. This section will be done by Scantron as well (on the back of it) . 30 points.
C. Definitions
There will be 3 terms to define fully, not just with one or two word answers . Include an actual definition of the term, a date if applicable and three other major detailed facts about why the term is important. You will have at least 6 terms to choose 3 from for 30 points. Terms are drawn from the same source as those listed in B (Matching) just above . You must ONLY answer 3. terms. Answering more than or fewer than 3 terms will be considered a mistake and will cost you points. If you don't write out full answers for this section you WILL be docked severely. 30 points.
D. Essays
I will select two essays to give you. You should answer JUST ONE. 15 points. The essay choices I will draw from include the following. I will pick the choices. For each essay you should have at least 10 MAJOR IMPORTANT POINTS. This essay will be formally graded and incorporated into your final examination score. You cannot retake it.
- Discuss the influences that we highlighted that made up the style of Alfred Hitchcock. Give specific people and artistic influences as well as personal influences and idiosyncracies.
- The films of Dario Argento show a strong artistic influence. What movement does he follow particularly and who are some of the major artists of this movement. What are the characteristics found in his work and in the movement?
- How did the art of the 1960s which we studied get reflected in popular culture? Names some artists and works and the influence that they had.
- What in your opinion was the significance of Vera-Ellen's artistry and what do you think happened to her that caused her to end her days in the manner that she did? Discuss her secret problem and obsession. What were her particular talents and how did she display them?
